My Spiritual Awakening

Firstly, welcome to the blog! I’m going to do a monthly update about my spiritual journey, called ‘communing with spirits’ (i.e. this). In these posts I’ll go over everything I’ve learnt and kind of where my headspace is theologically for that month.

A brief history of me and my belief in the supernatural- or lack thereof. Whilst I always went to Anglican schools, I have never really believed in an organised religion. Growing up, my mum didn’t really talk about religion (I don’t think she thought about it much), and my dad was quite a vocal Atheist. I followed in my dad’s footsteps, it always seemed nonsensical to me that someone could believe in an all loving, all knowing, all powerful god whilst knowing how awful some aspects of the world were. I never really paid any mind to witches or self-identified ‘spiritual people’. I would ridicule them sometimes (albeit subtly) to their faces. It just wasn’t an option for me- for some reason I couldn’t wrap my head around it. (Despite this mindset, I loved crystals, and had a deep desire to truly practice witchcraft, but believed I couldn’t do it authentically). I slowly removed the Atheist label and began identifying as agnostic. I did this in a ‘Richard Dawkins’ way- I was as sure there were no gods as I was sure there were no unicorns; hence the term ‘agnostic atheist’.

Since finishing Sixth Form a year ago, my perspective has shifted. After a year of nothing but washing dishes at the local pub, a failed solo-travel experience, and copious amounts of time on my hands, I was able to do lots of self-reflection. This has led to a spiritual awakening of sorts. I mean, I didn’t wake up one day and suddenly see the light, there was no major event that triggered this, just a slowly opening mind and the retreat of my usually cynical attitude. I have really tried to be more of a glass half full person recently, and this has led to me being more open to trying new things; more specifically- Astral Projection.

My mum’s best friend is very spiritual. Spiritual to the point that I was freaked out by it, and I am ashamed to admit I was blatantly rude and mocking towards her practice. For my 18th birthday she offered to guide me through an astral projection. To my complete and utter surprise- and slight horror- I really enjoyed sinking into the meditative state. I am sceptical as to whether what I saw was really a past life- I truly believe this life is the first time I have existed. That being said, I cherished the opportunity to sink into a trance like state and let my creative juices flow freely.

I was not immediately a convert after this, it took lots of thinking (and one more astral projection) for me to start being truly curious about witchcraft. Truthfully, it was a 3am reddit session on a baby witch forum that introduced me to the concept of an atheist witch. I could worship nature, her gifts, and the earth without believing in a higher power. This was a revolutionary concept to my rigid little brain. I started properly researching after that day, mainly on reddit, and a bit of TikTok. I discovered different creators and started watching their videos on YouTube- RueTheWitch, and Karissa Love are my favourites, and I would love more suggestions like them. I realised that I definitely needed to actually read a book if I was serious, so I picked up The Modern Guide To Witchcraft by Skye Alexander. This book has truly opened my eyes and I am really starting to believe there could be more out there (maybe even unicorns- who knows?) than I initially believed.

Being a baby witch is not for the weak. There is so much advice online about where to start, which type of witch to identify as, what you need to begin etc. that I am finding it slightly overwhelming. I am taking things very slowly, I haven’t even performed my first spell yet. Stuff I have been doing: burning incense, manifesting, learning yoga and meditation techniques, keeping a record of all the dreams I’ve had, bought and am reading one book, bought one rose quartz crystal off Etsy that I feel I am forming a bond with, and lastly a deck of tarot cards. I felt so drawn to this specific deck and have learnt how to draw them. I am obviously not an expert at reading them, but the booklet that they came with tells me what they mean and I’ve found them really applicable to my daily life and a nice part of my morning routine.

That’s all for now, we will catch up on this topic in a month(ish) and see how far I’ve come. I’m looking forward to the full moon on the 29th July and have big plans of making my first batch of moon water and hopefully learning some protection and glamour spells. Goodbye my sweet Dotties for now xxx

(p.s I am going to call my readers Dotties- a kind of anagram for Daughters of the Stars- DOTS)
